Daedalus, momentarily stricken with jealousy EssayDaedalus was a highly respected and talented Athenian artisan descending(prenominal) from the royal family of Cecrops, the mythical first king of Athens. He was known for his skill as an architect, sculpture, and inventor, and he produced many famous works. Despite his self-confidence, Daedalus once committed a crime of envy against Talus, his nephew and apprentice. Talus, who seemed destined to become as great an artisan as his uncle Daedalus, was inspired one day to invent the saw after having seen the federal agency a snake used its jaws. Daedalus, momentarily stricken with jealousy, threw Talus off of the Acropolis. For this crime, Daedalus was exiled to Crete and placed in the service of queer Minos, where he eventually had a son, Icarus, with the pretty Naucrate, a mistress-slave of the King. Minos called on Daedalus to build the famous Labyrinth in order to imprison the dreaded Minotaur. The Minotaur was a monster with the head of a bull and the automobile trunk of a man. He was the son of Pasiphae, the wife of Minos, and a bull that Poseidon had sent to Minos as a gift.Minos was shamed by the birth of this horrible creature and settle to imprison the Minotaur in the Labyrinth where it fed on humans, which were taken as tribute by Minos and sacrificed to the Minotaur in memory of his fallen son Androgenos. Marks and Spencers Business Strategy

Marks and Spencers Business StrategyIntroductionIn section A of this report, we go away break follow up and assess Marks and Spencers (MS) victuals sector fear scheme. In preceding consultancy t lease we examined UK supermarket sector and business surroundings. That provide be crucial in thought current MS strategic position. Also, it testament overhaul us to identify sources of competitive advantage and at the same time opport building blockies for coming(prenominal) strategic positioning. In addition, we have to be awargon of unions non- financial performances as well as quantitative incarnate objectives and key performance indicators. Analysing them using balanced scorecard and benchmarking method result show us, is our outline sustainable, does it have long run stance and direction we atomic number 18 currently moving. This will be covered in part B of this reportPart AStrategy preserve be defined as the direction and scope of an organization over the long term , which achieves advantage in a changing environment through its configuration of resources and make donces with the aim of fulfilling stakeholder expectations (Johnson et al. 2005, pp.9). According to Porter (1996) friendship can do better than other companies merely if it can establish a difference it can preserve (Porter 1996, pp.63). Delivering additional value to customers, providing them with comparable products at lower approach or both is a erect way to make a difference according to the author.Johnson et al. (2005) presented three Porters generic strategies which could be use by companies to achieve competitive advantage cost leadership, differentiation and focus. It can be concluded that MS using focused differentiation strategy. According to the Bowmans strategy clock this strategy is seen as high price strategy which gives perceived high value to customers. They choose to differentiate themselves from other food retailers with realise quality own notice food, r eady prepared meals, fresh food and food for special occasions. They do not attract customers for full weekly groceries shopping but gives them additional value for their money with focus on gaud and quality. Their simply food stores contributed with high margins to over exclusively sales in past few forms. Also, they expanded abroad to 40 countries in order to attract unsanded sales into the same niche. This is legitimate with Johnson et al. (2005) who explained that growth may be achieved by sharpening new sale at the same market niche abroad. In previous consultancy we analyse supermarket sector using Porters five forces modeling. That easeed us to better understand manufacture in which MS operates. We concluded that power of suppliers is high due to a lot of supermarkets and brands. Also the threat of substitutes is high because customers now want better value for money. MS is aware of that, especially because that was primary reason for a heavy(p) decline in sales in 1990. The power of suppliers is low because of huge number of fragmented suppliers. Threat of new entries is on medium level and tilt among industry is on high level. The four biggest food retailers in UK (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury and Morrison) have almost 76% market share. Therefore, MS with 3.9% market share in 2009 cannot compete with lower price strategy. Their focus is more on product quality. The MS food offer has largely focused on the upper end of the toilet market, typically higher than its positioning for non-food.1 They are merchandising own brand labels only to their customers which giving them value for money. It serves them in promotion of overall MS brand. The superb thing is introduction of some branded goods from 2008, because of higher targeted customers demand.MS food sector strategy lies on companys basic values Quality, Freshness, and Value, Standards of innovation, Ethical Sourcing and Healthy eating.2 MS is premium food retailer and food sector is very import ant to overall group business and performance. It brings over 50 percent of group revenues in UK with sales of 4.25bn in 2009.Previous consultancy also shows that the most influential dilutes in broad environment related to food industry are victuals industry was relatively recession proof and these days UK is officially out of recession after six consecutive quarters.3 High level of inflation in UK (CPI inflation=3 percent) is the reason which contributed to retailers profitability. In 2009, MS reported slightly belittle in margins and profitability. Previous year, they were moving in good direction with initiatives to cut cost ( market, distribution, brave out) and reinvest that money in prices to provide better value to customers. The bad thing is reducing capital expenditures for almost 40% which have to create value in proximo.Increasing number of healthy conscious consumers is a second trend. As a premium food retailer who is selling top quality food, this trend is big st rategic opportunity for MS future strategic positioning. In addition to this, survey show that only one in six customers switched to slight expensive and frozen food.4Today we have environmentally aware consumers. MS is first food retailer who realizes that. Thus, they presented Plan A in 2007 with 100 environmentally commitments to complete within five years. Today, after two years they achieve 39 commitments. This strategy have aim to differentiate their food business from principal(prenominal) rivalrys.Online shopping is also todays trend and opportunity for retailers. They launched MS direct and free wine delivery as a result of growing demand. In 2009 MS market share decline from 4.3% to 3.9% and this is opposite to what board of directors announced in 2008. They predicted growth in market share to 5%.5 In formulating strategy for neighboring year, they have to take into account few things which will have effect on customers disposable income. From January 2010, we have incr ease in Value added tax from 15 to 17.5%. Personal income tax will stay at the same level in 2011.This fiscal measure will affect 70,000 people crosswise UK who are now in higher tax band. Additionally we have announced increase in sin taxes for alcoholic drinks. Customers are today spending 36 per person per week on food in UK.6 Previous mentioned changes will have certain squeeze on customers spending habits. Probably they will not cut food expenses, but some products coul be more affected. That is one reason more for MS to provide customers with additional value for money.Part BBalanced scorecardThe Balanced scorecard is an integrated set of performance measures derived from the companys strategy that gives top management a fast but comprehensive study of the organizational unit. (Drury 2004, pp.1001). The main question behind the balanced scorecard concept according to Kaplan and Norton (2001) is how to measure future performance. The authors were aware that companies are only in 10 to 30 percent successful in executing its strategy. The main reasons are vision, people, resource and other barriers. For example non- apprehensiveness of strategy by employees or management fails to data link budget with strategy objectives. Also they realize importance of intangible assets, not capital anymore in adding value to company. In this new business environment focus only on past financial measures (profit, cash flow) and not taking into account non-financial performances much(prenominal) as customer satisfaction could be blackened for organization. The authors presented framework and suggest every company to be viewed from four perspectives financial, customer, internal business process and learning and growth perspective. All financial and non-financial measures and objectives should be found on companys vision and strategy. That will help managers to have overview over whole processes in company and employees to better understand global firms strategy. We wi ll use suggested framework to support formulation and implementation of Marks and Spencers current strategy.1. Financial perspectiveKaplan and Norton (2001) argue that non-financial perspectives are important but the same is with financial perspective. The reason is simple. set up from other three perspectives will show their impact through companys financial performances. Marks and Spencer current financial objectives on group level and business unit level are to reduce be and manage cash flow.In 2009, the effect of broad environment and recession in UK impacted direction of MS strategy. Because of decrease in UK food sector sales and decrease in market share from 4.3% to 3.9 % they choose to reduce costs with aim to keep profitability. Food gross margin was down 235 bps at 31.5%. We can continue to use gross margin as performance measure. Also, we could use profitability measures such as Operating profit, Return on equity, Return on capital employed and net margin which are alre ady being used as MS key performance measures. The results of reducing costs are, reduced spending in support areas and marketing activities of 8.6% without threatening customer satisfaction (stayed at second-rate high level of 84%) and increase of only 1.9% in staff costs. These activities will have impact on profitability in coming years. The target for next year should increase of 10% in mentioned profitability measures. On the other hand, probative cut in capital expenditures of 450 million had immediate impact on companys cash flow from investing activities. MS also have to focus to on how to improve operating cash flow. They decreased cash renewal cycle for almost 6 days.7 They should further monitor debtor payment period, creditor collection period and stock clearance period (decrease from 8.7 to 4.29 days in 2009).8 In future, decrease of 10-20 % in stock clearance period and cash conversion cycle could help the company to have stronger cash flow.2. Customer perspective o f import objectives of MS in order to increase market share, acquire new customers and keep customer satisfaction on a high level are to provide customers on targeted market with additional innovation, improved on-shelf availability and to give them additional value for money. The last have roots to year 1935 slogan Dont ask the price its a penny9. They took numerous promotions like Wise buys, Family favourites for 4 and Dine in for two for 10 during the year. Despite this investing in prices across food range have impact on companys margins, it also provides customers with better value. In 2009 survey, MS is recognized as a leader in top quality food. In future, they should increase wise buys products from existing 10% food range and set target measure to 15%. Also, innovation in products should be continued and monitored with comparing percent of new products in overall products. Relating to on-shelf availability, they already employ more people in stores, open new 75 and close 26 stores with underperforming performances. This trend should be continued because it gives customers more convenience shopping. Customer loyalty, satisfaction and quality customer service are important in future period especially when market share declined 0.4%.3. Learning and Growth perspectiveKaplan and Norton (1996) recognized importance of intangible assets and employees as most important resource company have. In order to keep customers satisfied and loyal, company need to invest in its employees, systems and organizational procedures according to Drury (2004). Therefore, employee satisfaction, investment in employee skill and training moldiness not be overlooked.MS have good communication with employees via MS intranet and employee magazine. The results from employee satisfaction survey Your Say show high response rate (90%) and consistent score with previous years of 70%. Another two measures could be applied to measure employee capabilities- employee retention and employee p roductivity. prevail two derived from employee satisfaction, because only satisfied employee could be productive.Investment in employee skills is recognized as important for MS. Thus, organization of development programme for 2000 lines managers, leadership programme and food academy are vital for future growth and development. The aim to become most sustainable retailer by 2015 they converted into the Plan A. It is also in accordance with Food industry sustainability strategy presented by DEFRA in 2006. They already fulfilled 39 commitments in order to become energy efficient, send no waste to landfill and become carbon neutral. laughingstock of accomplished 15 new commitments per year will keep them on right way to reach this strategic goal.4. Internal business process perspectiveAccording to Drury (2004) internal business process perspective need to give answer on question what business processes will increase value to shareholders and customers and help company achieve its visi on at the same time. MS recognizes that investment in innovation process and transaction process (decrease distribution costs, maintain supplier satisfaction, increase efficiency in value chain and process quality) are vital to succeed.MS already presented innovation in food from national cuisines (Italian, Chinese etc.) and should monitor percentage of sales from these new products, also compare themselves with competitors (at first place Waitrose who is concentred on the same market niche- top quality food). To excel in innovation field, they should also focus on market products in which they are first or second in the market according to Drury (2004).Innovations in operation process has aim to make more efficient supply and value chain in a company. On one side we have suppliers and customers on other. Already half of 2000 suppliers were trained on MS ethical standards. Distribution costs will be managed with implementation of SAP software and building of interior(prenominal) a nd international logistic and distribution centres. Once a build, they will significantly decrease distribution cost and time.Balanced scorecard method (BSC) will help organizations to translate vision into performance measures and improve communication within the company. Also we have to be aware of some limitations of BSC. Othman (2007) argues that BSC is static, ignores external environment and treat company as mechanical system. Drury (2004) describe that empirical study failed to provide evidence that link between non-financial data and financial performance in future exists- which is the precondition of BSC method.BenchmarkingThere are numerous definitions of benchmarking. One of the first books written about benchmarking providing definition of this method was in The search for industry best practices that lead to prize performances in 1989 by Camp. Until today many definitions emerged but however the most quoted one is from this book that says Benchmarking is the search f or the best industry practices which will lead to exceeding performance through the implementation of these best practices (Ungen 2007,pp. 335).In this part, we are going to look at our internal strength and weaknesses, make comparison with our closest competitor in UK market- Waitrose, because both have almost the same market share of about 4% and the same market focus- top quality food. At the end, we will make comparison with Tesco and Sainsbury as a market leaders and see could we use knowledge to improve our operations. Here the aim is to learn from our competitors, not only to compare with them.First we have to understand our internal position- segments we are good at, possible opportunities and segments where improvement is needed. MS differentiate itself with high quality food and at the same time have perception among customers as a top food retailer. It has strong brand for last 125 years, strong internal financial sources and good communication with customers and supplie rs. Almost 100% own label food is advantage but at same time could be weakness. So, they start selling branded premium food which they do not produce. Main opportunity is in further expansion to international market. Today, MS has 296 stores in 40 countries with significant 26% increase in international sales. In future, they should expand more as a wholly owned business, not as franchising business.Second, comparison with Waitrose we will start comparing their financial performances because they will show us how successful other perspectives from the balanced scorecard are. An MS food sector sale is down 0.1% at 4.25bn with loss of market share of 0.4%. On the other hand, in the same period Waitrose increase its sale for 5% to 4.2bn, market share 0.4% and decrease in operating margin 45 bps to 5.1%. Increase in Waitroses margins is at some part result of 13 Somerfield stores acquired in 2008. Waitrose is also focused on premium organic food brand. Comparing with Waitrose, MS opened 47 stores more and is selling 3600 products more with much more own label food selling. This store opening trend in previous years was primary reason for margin increase but now MS should tight monitor store performance (already close 26 underperformed stores in 2009) and different product lines and replace slow selling products. MS in terms of price is above Waitrose and selling almost 100% own brand food with products made in UK is major difference from competitor.10 As a result their sales depends entirely on own label products. In addition to this in 2009 MS made a cut of 127m in marketing activities which was important for him in food sector positioning.11 In Corporate social responsibility section, MS is leader with presented 100 commitments plan A. Also partnership with Amazon will help them improve on-line shopping segment. On the other hand, Waitrose presented online food delivery service which could be next step for MS in satisfaction of customer needs. In UK food retail sector, major market share has Tesco and Sainsbury. They both have access to economies of scale and price promotions are fundamental part of their strategy. On the other hand, MS differentiate itself with providing additional value not cheaper price to customers. Despite different in size, MS could use good practice from leaders to achieve better results. Sainsbury launched these days promotion buy now free next time.12 MS could implement these on 500 wise buys products which are 10 % of range in a one month period and closely look at sales, profit margin and overall financial effect. Also, Tesco since last year increase 29% percent increase in marketing activities.13 In year where we have 13.8% drop in organic food sale, cutting marketing activities as MS did should be re-examined. Tesco, for example offer double points in order to keep customer loyalty. MS has only 39 outlets out of 668 stores in UK. This number should be increased in future because of rising consumers demand for convenience shopping. Also, search for value and healthier eating will be still in customer focus.14Benchmarking can support BSC with recommendations from outside the company how internal, customer and learning and growth perspective could be improved. One of the main critics to benchmarking according to Johnson et al. (2005) it will not identify the reasons for companys good or poor performance. But Benchmarking as a tool have aim to improve companys performance and can support BSC. Therefore, synergy between benchmarking and BSC and implementation of current trends and best practice into organization will improve financial perspective of our company.ConclusionThis report showed importance of understanding broad environment and market sector in strategy formulating and implementation. For example, mature supermarket sector in UK is one of the reasons for MSs decision to invest in developing countries in the same premium food market niche. In part B we showed changed focus from capit al to intangible assets and from financial to non-financial measure. It is important for MS to monitor all four perspectives in order to have sustainable long- run strategy. Also it is vital for MS to understand what facors influence the financial and operational performance. Therefore, benchmarking and BSC should be used together in strategy formulation and implementation.ReferencesCompetition Commission (2000). It was always known for its trends and creativeness. It has evolved from a domestic manufacturing industry into a design led industry. The fashion designing industry benefits from high turnoer of new and exciting designers, innovation, competitive looks and styles(Nathan,2009)As per ( tradeing Week, 2009) suggests that the online sell industry lowlife be perceived as a rather complicated means of establishing a business. However in comparison with traditional ways of setting up retail business, electronic medium provide instant access to considerably larger geographical span of target market at a very commencement setup and operational equal. The proposal willing highlight the opportunities of using e-commerce as a solution for the growth of the fashion designers business.2.1 E-CommerceE-commerce has made it possible to communicate with multitude and carry out transactions any time of the day at the customers ease. It is beneficial for the companies to acquire access to the global markets and compete easily with larger identical markets.Shopping online creates a virtual store for the customers to purchase the products and services therefore use of online retail in fashion is growing all over the world. Uni ted Kingdoms fashion industry is participating with optimism in e-commerce. According to (National Statistics,2009) businesses in the online retail sector showed the largest rise in sales by 106.6bn pounds in 2008 comp ared to other sectors (travelling, sweeping and real-estate)When evaluating the importance of online business in an organization, it is useful to identify the different types of e-commerce transactions. One of them is sell-side e-commerce.As per (Napier et al,2005), sell-side e-commerce involves transactions with selling products to an organizations customers. Sell-side ecommerce provides some different types of vanesites. A typical transactional e-commerce website is a site which enables purchase of products online and also to give them an option of purchasing in standalone stores (Chaffey, 2007) .Most of the fashion businesses use transactional e-commerce websites so that the customers have the preference of either buy their items online or offline.2.2 Opportuni ties for Using Sell-side E-commerceThere has been a revolution in the way fashion companies are using different tactics and offering their products and services to the online consumers. Paul metalworker a designer based in London launched his first online obtain website in 2009, based on B2C model. European customers are able to access the website, concisely it will be extended to international market (Lepper,2009). New fashion designers have started opening their online defecates in ebay following the C2C model. They are selling their products without any middleman. This is a good way to start up their initial business at less(prenominal) embody and expo undisputable to the international markets(Bora,2010) and (Chaffey, 2007) suggests that using sell-side e-commerce consists of many other advantages which will be discussed belowSell-Side E-commerce potbelly reach the customers globally. It enables the companies or individual to reach their customers worldwide. Small companies can also reach their target audience and maintain global relationships without the restriction of finance.Time is not a constraint in e-commerce business. Many companies benefit from the fact that one can do business online 24/7.It has been cost effective for many online stores. Opening and maintaining stand alone stores can be very costly. The online store cuts down the sales force, utility bills and other operating cost that is present in offline stores.Customers database can be easily stored and maintained online. Tracking the regular customers is easy. One can send regular newsletters, emails, vouchers about the products and services to customers who essential the information. Their information can be stored when they register and automatic updates can be sent to them via email. This helps in retaining customers.Payments online makes transaction easier and quick. Sales are processed more than apace and effectivelyThe highlighted benefits show that e-commerce has changed the way consumers shop. Consumers and sellers both have the benefit of selling and purchasing online at their own time and leisure. The technology has changed the behaviour of shopping for customers where they can save time and the options of choosing from variety of products. It goes on to show that e-commerce will be here for a long time and continuously grow as well.3.1 carrying out of E-Commerce ProposalOnline fashion retail business in UK is a demand driven growing industry. There are more than 50 websites set up by entrepreneur fashion designers in the country to promote their vitiated businesses worldwide. (Pendle,2008).Building a flourishing site on the internet is every good turn as hard as creating a challenging store environment. Like stand alone stores, online stores have to be created to display successful shopping puzzle for the customers. Yet online retailers have to address the complications arising from the unpredictable behaviour of customers and development of com petitors websites. According to (Chaffey,2007) Many companies have look att with these problems and moved in the online world by applying blogging and choosing solution providers that outflank suits their company, overcoming the limitations of e-commerce and following the laws in a proper manner. The fashion designer could start the e-commerce business slowly with the help of blogging. Not only established designers but the small or individual companies have adopted this approach to start their own business online. Starting a blog could also start the awareness to audience. Online fashion media is growing and blogging is a big part of it. Fashion bloggers are becoming more famous than the press itself. The thing with bloggers is that the companies have no control over it. Anyone can write about anything on the internet. (Copping, 2009) suggests the most of the bloggers are young and not consumers of designer brands. Yet they are uncontrollable and designers are learning to deal wit h it. Also many famous designer companies such as Gucci paid a group of fashion bloggers to create the extra hype and awareness of a fashion show held in Paris. Louis Vuitton was the first to use facebook to broadcast a catwalk show live. Meanwhile Dolce Gabana streamlined its fashion event directly on youtube. Thus it can be said that blogging is becoming interesting and insightful in the fashion world. Even few customers visiting and discovering the identity through the blogs could urge on their friends and families and promote the business. After she gets recognised in the market, she can start her own small website and build on it when the company starts growing. Launching the website can be through with(p) through a limited budget and when the company picks up on sales, hiring proper marketing agents and solution providers to ensure that the designer gets all her potential clients shopping on the website.Community websites can be very effective to promote such young and tale nted designers. They dont really have to open their own web site to sell products which would require large amount of investment, but the designer can use community websites like facebook and wordpress.(Cave,2009) suggests that broadband of UK plays a big reference in easy and reliable access for customers online. Although there are companies available who are working hard to facilitate fast internet connections such as BT in UK but they should focus more on making internet safe for the consumers by using security checks in websites and with the help of banks make sure that the payment cards used online are made by the authenticated user such as 3D secure. The designer should capitalize on the commercial message opportunities and choose the right solution provider to provide its customers with optimum security via internet shoppingThe designer could incorporate m-commerce software in the website so the consumers of UK can shop easily anytime of the day. As per (Napier et al,2005) increasing popularity of wireless communication and handheld devices, have led to mobile-commerce. It is the process of buying and selling goods through wireless technology. Customers are increasingly using mobile communication as an option to browse the internet. Making the website accessed from mobile phones can be useful for fashion companies targeting worldwide customers. The preceding(prenominal) points highlights that the designer should start her business slowly by using free community websites and blogging to establish her identity and then move forward in creation an online business with adding in m-commerce to increase more customers. This could be an opportunity for her to become a successful online fashion designer.3.2 Issues to be AddressedSell-Side E-commerce like any other business consists of some issues that are important to identify. These drawbacks can bring hesitation among people to use the internet freely. Many developing countries still restrict themselves to shop online and prefer going to the stores for the products.Trust is the main issue in online shopping. Customers are sensitive and reluctant in giving their financial information online if it is not a secure website. Many people dont feel secure in doing transactions online as e-commerce can be prone to security pseud. Credit card fraud has been increasing these days, discouraging the consumers from shopping online. (Bora,2010)Another limitation that e-commerce consist of is updating the product information from time to time. Maintaining the customer orders and website is also very crucial in online business. This can be time consuming and tiring for companies. Privilege of feeling and touching the product is not available in e-commerce websites. Some customers feel less satisfied in ordering the product before examining it properly.Setting up an e-business is purely dependant on technology. Knowledge of IT is important in running a business especially for individuals and small c ompanies. If technology fails, company has to be very vigilant of the backup as there will be no other substitute. Also delivery of the products can take a longer time and it may result in a wrong order. This discourages the customer in buying product from the same company again or in the worst case shopping online altogether.Due to the some of the limitations of technology identified above of presumption issues over security on internet, e-commerce is still not accepted and used in many countries but no doubt that when it comes to UK customers are more surefooted in shopping online by secure means and having trust over online companies.4.1 ConclusionThe technical aspects of ecommerce and its importance in establishing online businesses in the UK provided interesting findings concerning e-commerce and their organizations. UK e-commerce is common and consumers prefer it due to convenience, secure payment systems, different variety of choices available and it fits their demands and requirements. The given proposal will be beneficial for the fashion designer in many ways such asThe profit margin will increase immensely. One good thing about e-commerce in fashion industry is that it is a good opportunity for companies to invest in online websites in this recession period. This will help the designer in cutting down the high budgets spent in stores and as it is becoming common that every company is going online, the future of e-commerce would be bright for the designer. One of the benefits would be able to compete in the market. To be competitive in the market, sales and different promotions have to be set not only in stores but online as well to get more customers to browse the website. An advantage to companies who have online websites as they offer flexibility to its shoppers to shop 24/7 a day from work or home, this would generate more revenue for the businessAs there are many protection plans for e-commerce websites in the UK, these laws and secure mediums pro vide safety to the consumers and are it offers the small organizations to compete with global industries easily. Due to these legal protections for newly established e-commerce sites, care is taken for the businesses to protect the customers who in turn shop with confidence online.Indication of the time periodMarket research will take approximately 6 weeksMarketing will take 2 weeksDesign and website development will take one calendar monthMaintenance will be ongoingTherefore the whole project plan will take approximately 3 months to complete while its concern and fixes will be in progress taken care by solution provider chosen.

A creative and innovative fashion always applies to generate very high levels of customer satisfaction. Providing customers with the option of meshing appointments and co nsultations online.3.0 The Business environment (PESTLE analysis)Like any other business, the Nail salon has to act and react to external factors influences it. Since markets are changing all the time. Customer develops new needs and wants, new competitors enter a market, new technology means that new product can be made. Government introduces new canon e.g. outgrowth minimum wage means that the disposable income increase it may lead to higher level professional service. Therefore, it is essential to know the influence of external factors embroil semi regimenal, economical, socio-cultural, technological, legal and ethical environment is (13).The political environment is one of the most important factors usurping the operation of a business. It is part of the macro-environment which is external to an organisation and solely beyond its underwrite. The effect of political on business in general Politic affect business in varieties of levels.Business is affected directly by tax p olicy high tax rate will attract less investor (chart 8 in cecal appendage1).Policies of government are very important. For example UK is the elected country, people have full voting authority they would be able to choose government that would work for the betterment of the country. It helps businesses to thrive because of the good policies of the government. In contrast, if there is no democracy, there is no respect for the chosen government. Instability and uncertainty in the country arise, government comes and goes and so will their respective decisions and policies. Business will suffer in such case as they do not know what will be their future. An example of instability political causes negatively influencing is the effectuate of anti-government protestors on hotel operators in Thailand in December 2008. Chart 9 (Appendix1) shows a loss of room revenue during period of peak tourist season. It is clear that the political instability is negatively influences travelers decision m aking (7).Furthermore, a stable political situation will attract more and more investors from other nations. The effect of the political environment on nail salonTax policy as a sole trader Nicer Nail salon owner has responsibility to conciliate for local business tax, VAT, corporation capital income tax for business and national insurance for employees. Because by doing so the government know the presence of the business. The conservative government recently announced a new austerity plan. It causes higher interest rates, more business failures, lead to shaper rise in unemployment, directly affect the bank and national disposable income. As a result, the salon revenue may reduce significantly.Economical environment It is believed that the level of rent for nail treatments can change depending on consumers level of disposable income. Businesses are in areas hard-hit economically will suffer because people lost jobs they have to tighten their belts and take control of their spending habits. Since many people are of the opinion that having nails done is not a necessitate social occasion. As a service industry, many beauty salons are being hit severely. Retail Sale is another example of industry that suffers when the surrounding economy turns down. Chart 11 (appendix 1) shows a lot of retailers report losings and in fact go out of business.Fortunately, the economy in the UK is in fast recovery (Chart 5 appendix 1). Additionally, chart 6 (Appendix 1) show base expenditure and total employment rose (5). Increasing in disposable income means that people can spend on luxuries like nail treatments.Furthermore, The British Lifestyles report by question group Mintel found that in the last decade we have spent 50% more on trips to hairdressing and beauty salons. This proves that the beauty market increases continuously despite the fact that the economic market condition in the UK is still in recession. Regardless of the recession, there are still people who enjoy bei ng pampered. It makes professional nail care is a business with many good advantages.Socio-cultural environmentEvery business works in society and consequently is subject to a variety of social influences. These influences acknowledge demography, social class and culture (13).For example, result from 2010 Survey of Hours and Earnings (chart 10 appendix 1) show that median earning of female employees grew. Increasing number of career women trends developing a high maintenance notion towards beauty regimes. This is reflected in the increasing heart of nail bars and services available.Nicer Nail Salon is the place where hard working people can come to get away from their daily stresses and be truly spoilt, a place that had the look and feel of a posh city salon.Nail arts can be a fashion line of reasoning and express individual for young clienteles who follow the latest trends and styles with a desire to be fashionable. Other services such as ear piercing, facial, and waxing eyelash es treatments are also offered to attract new clients. On the other hand, UK population is ageing (chart 4 Appendix I), ageing population means that the need to provide for a wider age range of clients is essential.Nodaway, Women earn more they will spend more money to look good. Plus the influence of fashion and changes in attitude toward health make professional nail care become booming industry.Technological environmentAdvances in technology can have a major tint on business success. For example, one of the easiest and quickest way to let high-end class clienteles know that the salon are dedicated to serving them with luxurious pampering is creating a website that speaks to their needs and wants. Since, today the internet has major influence on the way consumers research and purchase products. By registering the nail salon with online portals the potential customers can slow reach the salon website which provide company name and contact information with online directories. Furt hermore, option of consultants online 24/7 shows the salon is dedicated to deliver professional service. Moreover, electric nail file, unlike manual tool, enables a nail technician to filling acrylic nails practically easier since the areas that were once hard to reach when filing manually such as cuticle areas and undersides of nails are now easily accessible. The electric nail drill is a time saver it allows the salon to serve more clients in a day and this should increase profit. In 2010, 19.2 million households had an Internet connection in the U.K. This represented 73 per cent of households and an increase of 0.9 million since 2009 (15) an enormous increase in the number of home computer. This makes internet becomes one of the best ways to advertise the salon. On the other hand, improvements in technology will reduce the costs of nails equipment and products for example nail varnishes, jewellery. This should increase salon revenue. The legal environment health and safety is impo rtant when working as a nail technician. wellness and safety legislation is part of criminal law. Failure to comply with the law has serious consequence for example if there is a severe risk to health and safety, the salon will be closed down until improvements have been made. The salon has to work within the legal and professional frameworks that set the standards for employment. The law demands that every place of work is a healthy and safe for clients, workers, and other visitors. For example, potentially hazardous substances like glues or acetones should be carefully handle. The salon must follow the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) (10).My salon also looks forward to Legal requirement such as accident insurance and safety disposable products. The salon will keep to the Health and Safety guidance produced by Habia for nail technicians (9). This involves controlling and minimizing skin exposure to nail products, disinfecting equipment for manicuri ng, cleaning and minimizing inhalation exposure to nail productsA nail technician should provide a service with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable space of time and at a reasonable charge (The Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982). The nail technician will commit a criminal offence if published misleading advertising that deceives another trader (The Business Protection from misguide Regulations 2008). Hence, it is crucial to know about the laws.Ethnical environmentMethyl methacrylate (MMA) is a monomer used in nail enhancement application but it should not be used in the salon due to its dangerous effect such as blister and nail loss for natural nails or respiration task and asthma for some people even though it is still legal to use in the UK.Acrylic contaminated materials should be sealed in a bag before disposal in the bin reducing the amount of chemicals in the air. Gauze pads, cotton wool etc. that have been soaked in chemical should be disposed of in a sealed b ag.The intended legal entity for my companyThe salon operates as sole trader. I have look and found that being a sole trader is the easiest way to start a small business like a nail spa. Accounting is much easier hence bills for accountants are lower. Plus no complicated paperwork is required. Importantly, decision can be make quickly and close contact can be unploughed with clients and employees. However, you have to make decisions and provide all finance by yourself. The business income is the owner income therefore it is harder to reduce tax bill.Registration and regulationNail technicians are required to register their business and apply for a license to trade. The licence is known as a special treatment licence. The fee to register will depend on each local authority. As a Sole Trader, the salon owner needs to register with Her Majestys Revenue and Custom (HMRC) as freelance(a) at the moment the business has started otherwise the financial penalty will be charged.Financial pla nThe startup capital of 45,000 (appendix II for details) is required to use for the design, leasehold improvement, and equipment of the salon. There are many ways to raise finance for examples borrow from family, get a bank loan or from outside investors. I did research and found that the best way to raise capital for Nicer Nail Salon is borrowing from my parent because they provide with better terms than the bank or surreptitious loan guarantees. In order to have successful business with family an agreement letter (Appendix II for details) between me and my parent is necessary in case thing dont go as planned. This also helps to protect everyone from each other and eliminate all conversations that start with you never said that. This bloodline emphasizes that my parent lend me 45,000 as a debt loan rather than equity. The interest will be paid quarterly to my parent account. Borrowing from parent is better than borrowing from private loan guarantees as the limit time frame stems is much longer. Compare to bank term loans, the interest rate is also much lower. Conclusion Based on the result from 2010 Survey of Hours and Earnings and British lifestyles I can conclude that Nicer Nail Salon is a necessary service nowadays. Owning a nail salon is promising as little start-up cost is needed and importantly, it is never out of season., it will be a good start of going somewhere with nail business. Nature Imagery and the Life Cycle in Robert freezings The Wind and the RainIn his poem The Wind and the Rain, Robert Frost develops a central theme, presenting a piece of musics reflection upon his life. As the man ages, he realizes that he fagged much of his life worrying about his inevitable decease instead of living his life to the fullest. The man expresses his desire to rejuvenate life at all costs he would rather die living than spend the rest of his life concerning himself with death. Robert Frosts theme in The Wind and the Rain, therefore, is that life should be lived, and one should not worry about his inevitable death, for he does not have the power to control death, only the agency he lives his life. Our Town Analysis :: essays research papers

Our Town AnalysisIn f correspond my township does not resemble the setting displayed in this play although I am sure the setting of our ancestors&8217 towns were much like this unrivalled. Back then everybody knew each other and they did not have to lock their doors and they had a strong upkeep of remnant and judgement which was indirectly implanted in their religion. This play was interesting because the representation of death portrayed as being so sudden. When death dissipate Emily, she suddenly realized how she had wasted her life on earth because they were repeating the same actions everyday of their. She became sad and also regretful that she could not tell her hubby George to get on with his life and end this incessant mourning. The setting is very important because the play is set in a small simple town and it demonstrates the precise actions of people of that time. The setting is special because it is vague therefore it lets your mind imagine the precise details of the scene. This is interesting because you see the scene the way you lack it so the author does not need to go into dull descriptions which are not too pleasing. The atmosphere is very obvious in this play because it is one of the most prominent factors in the play itself. In the first act the dominant mood is happiness because everybody is pursuing their normal activities and gossiping and the first act is used to introduce the characters for us to know their attitudes. In the second act the action is sped up and there is a special event which is marriage involves George and Emily. Emily shows a great deal of hesitation and the attendants at the ceremony are discussing the couple and how they were when they were young. In the third act the mood is sorrow and sadness caused by the death of Emily and her reaction at the overview of her own life. The relationship between George and Emily is very evident throughout the whole play. In the first act they shared a son/girl relationship and wer e good neighbors.
