Federal Reserve Presentation Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Federal Reserve Presentation - Research Paper Example 1.3 As the regulator for the nationââ¬â¢s banking and payments systems, the Fed makes rules for safe business practices by banks and other financial companies. These rules include the minimum cash reserves that a bank must maintain in proportion to the deposits with it. The Federal Reserve lends money to banks for maintaining these reserves or accepts deposits from them when they have excess money. The Fed also ensures that financial securities sold in the market are safe for the customer. The Federal Reserve has a Board of Governors based in Washington, DC, with a Chairman and 6 other members appointed to staggered 14 year terms. The Fed operates through 12 Reserve Banks that cover all 50 states. Each Reserve Bank has a Board made up of bankers, business people and members of the public and conduct all the activities described in (1) above. Five of the 12 Reserve Bank presidents together with the 7 governors of the Federal Reserve make up the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) which has the responsibility for key decisions such as interest rates, monetary policy and the buying and selling of treasury securities. The activities of the FOMC are reviewed by US Congress Committee on Banking and Financial Services. The Federal Reserveââ¬â¢s monetary policy affects prices, employment and economic growth by influencing the availability and cost of money and credit in the US economy. This cost influences the consumerââ¬â¢s willingness to spend money on goods and services. The three tools used by the FOMC for determining the cost of money are open market operations, the discount rate and the reserve requirements (FRBSF, 2013). Open market operations are used primarily to control money supply in the banking system. This is done by selling government securities to banks to reduce money supply or buying from them to increase liquidity. As a result of the disruptions caused by the 2008 global financial crisis, the Fed, invoking the

Beyond Budgeting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 1
Beyond Budgeting - Essay Example Traditional budgeting is no longer valid in the emerging information age that is why hospitality industry needs to move ââ¬Ëbeyond budgeting.ââ¬â¢ This is an alternative management model that promotes flexibility, devolution, and value maximization. This suggestion is supported by empirical investigation of hospitality budgeting mostly in the United Kingdom and United States. It is believed that Beyond Budgeting fits the progressive N-form organizational structure wherein full potential of the organization and the people are being liberated. Nowadays, most organizations are facing considerable barriers in managing their performance capabilities particularly in the areas of budgeting. Hospitality industry is one of those industries that desperately need to experience a new management structure and performance budgeting system in the emerging information age. Traditional budgeting model is said to be universally disliked because the concept is expensive, it takes too long to respond, and a minimized value. Shareholders as well as customers are pressuring the industry to consider an alternative management model that is designed to eliminate conflicts in the organization as well as the reduction of costs and bureaucracy. Aside from being cost effective and strategic, the new management model must also coincide with the business goals of the twenty-first century. This vision is a great challenge to every organization because it requires ââ¬Å"a new set of management process and new style of leadership...a new coherence amon g these management process and leadership principles to liberate full potential of the organization and its peopleâ⬠(Hope & Fraser, 2003, p.17). Beyond Budgeting is the model that has a capacity to manage performance and at the same time control the organization without budgets. However, the success of this concept is still doubtful to many organizations considering that

The existing logistics supply chain of the Land Rover - Essay Example This case study of land rover and UPF-Thompson implicates the risks that the company possess if the indulge themselves in one supply management chain. The emphasis is usually put on the management of the workflows of individuals and the information that accompany it. The supply chain of the organization usually carries one or more of these value streams. When The Land Rover company had decided that UPF-Thompson would be its main supplier of chassis, the land rover did not know that when UPF-Thompson, the manufacturer of chassis, would become insolvent the impact would be severe. KPMG, which was the receivers of the chassis, threatened the land rover that they would stop the supply unless the land rover company decided to make the up-front payment that was demanded immediately of between à £35 and à £45m. The reason as to why KPMG had decided to do this is that they claimed that they were entitled to recover on behalf of their creditors. The sole supplier agreement, which was signed , deemed to provide a valuable asset. A court ruling that was made recently justified this action as they stated that for the benefits of the creditors, the receivers were legally permitted to exploit the vulnerability of a customer. Until a temporary injunction could be secured which entitled Land Rover a short-term reprieve, then the land rover company was forced to halt the production of the discovery temporarily. The consequences of the injunction were that land Rovers supplier of network and around 1500 workers who worked at the Solihull plant were laid off. Process stream The land rover was using an end-to-end supply management perspective. The vulnerability of the
Compare and contrast the book with other materials Essay
Compare and contrast the book with other materials - Essay Example d that women were underrepresented in the work place because most of the jobs in the factories require a lot of physical energy making women unfit for these jobs. However, today with the major advancements in technology, a lot of jobs do not call for physical energy. This means that both women and men work well without difficulties. However, it is observed that even in these jobs, women are still underrepresented. I agree with the author that there is need to increase the diversity in the workplace by having an equal representation of both genders. It is true that both men and women have their biological differences, this also influences their perspectives and this can be tapped to get better performance at the work place. Women are also the care givers and homemakers; this should not be used as an excuse of not giving them jobs. However, I tend to disagree with the author that men should not be obligated to support their spouses. This is because the systems that already exist favor the male gender and removal of spousal support would only make the situation of the women worse. There is a need to have a complete overhaul of the current system and ensure that women get equal opportunities as the men and they would be able to support themselves. The salaries also need to be harmonized because you would observe in many instances women are given lower wages and salaries despite performing similar tasks to their male counterparts. The letter from Birmingham jail by Martin Luther King Junior is a justification of the nonviolent action that was being taken by Luther follow in Birmingham. The clergymen in the south have termed the move as untimely and unwise. According to him, the measures that the back people were conducting in order to have their rights given to them is incomparable to the injustices that the whites had metered towards the blacks. He says that they had burned down their houses, enslaved them and the segregation in Birmingham was worse than any other

The Evolution of Six Sigma - Research Paper Example However, it means a quality measure that attempts for perfection by eliminating defects in any process (Terry, 2010). As different organizations interpret Six Sigma differently, its definition varies from organization to organization. These variations do not harm the main crux of the approach. At Motorola, Six Sigma is a ââ¬Å"Metric, Methodology and a Management System while according to Six Sigma, it can be defined as three levels of ââ¬Å"Metric, Methodology and Philosophyâ⬠(Terry, 2010). The main objective of this approach is ââ¬Å"variation reduction and process improvement through the implementation of measurement-based strategy| (Montgomery & Woodall, 2008) by using Six Sigma improvement projects. Six Sigmaââ¬â¢s statistical representation describes the performance of a process quantitatively. For a process to achieve Six Sigma, it should not have more than ââ¬Å"3.4 defects per million opportunities; it has two sub methodologies namely DMAIC and DMADV that helps in achieving its objectiveâ⬠(Montgomery & Woodall, 2008). Six Sigma is an old concept that occupies an essential part in the history of management. The concept since its introduction has developed and improved over the years. This methodologyââ¬â¢s evolution is an integral part of what it is today. Its evolution consists of different stages based on the phases of time and developments made in it. To understand the complete evolution process of Six Sigma, it is important to understand each stage. The different stages of evolution are: In the early 1970s, numerous US companies faced extensive loss of business and markets. The adoption and use of statistical methods helped US industries to regain their competitiveness in regards of quality. This all resulted in the emergence of numerous management systems

John Updike`s A&P Essay Example for Free
John Updike`s AP Essay ââ¬Å"A Pâ⬠is first-person narrative revealing the delusively ordinary story related by the checkout boy in the grocery store named in the title. In ââ¬Å"A Pâ⬠the first-person narrator is defined largely by his tone and vocabulary. Updike molds his protagonist through the use of specific writing style, thus Sammy is casual and colloquial. The customers in his grocery are referred to as ââ¬Å"the sheepâ⬠the commonness of which has been one day disturbed by the appearance of a sexually uninhibited, young ladies in bathing suits. Surveying the three girls as they wander the aisles, Sammy describes the girls, and here Updikeââ¬â¢s style is prolifically intoxicated with the description of the girls with the flights of slang language, trying to show why these teenagers deserve the sacrifice: chunky with ââ¬Å"a sweet broad soft-looking canâ⬠, breasts, on the other hand, become ââ¬Å"two smooth scoops of vanillaâ⬠, the shoulder bones become ââ¬Å"dented sheet of metal tilted in the lightâ⬠. Besides, Sammyââ¬â¢s narration is lard with the discourse markers that make his flow of narration softer and folksy: ââ¬Å"kind of jerkâ⬠; ââ¬Å"she kind of led themâ⬠; ââ¬Å"she had sort of oaky hairâ⬠The colloquial style is expressed not only in the vocabulary of the protagonist but in the violated sentence structures. Updikes uniqueness lies in his process of detachment. Coming in adjective or adverb modifiers rather than main sentence elements, the ironic posture emerges without affecting plot: ââ¬Å"and a tall one, with black hair that hadnt quite frizzed right, and one of these sunburns right across under the eyes, and a chin that was too longyou know, the kind of girl other girls think is very ââ¬Å"strikingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"attractiveâ⬠but never quite makes it, as they very well know, which is why they like her so muchâ⬠Not rare are also broken structures like: ââ¬Å"She had on a kind of dirty-pinkbeige maybe, I dont knowbathing suitâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"The sheep pushing their carts down the aislethe girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one-way signs or anything)were pretty hilarious. â⬠The story is presented through the present-tense narration. Such choice of grammar technique imparts narration the sense of immediacy, makes it a chronicle of one event, so that reader feels as if he himself is a witness of that event. ââ¬Å"IN WALKS these three girls in nothing but bathing suitsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The girls, and whod blame them, are in a hurry to get out, â⬠, ââ¬Å"Lengel sighs and begins to look very patient and old and gray. â⬠Updikes striking adjectives appear often: ââ¬Å"kind of dirty-pinkbeige maybeâ⬠, ââ¬Å"chubby berry-faceâ⬠, ââ¬Å"long white prima-donna legsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"the cat-and-dog-food-breakfastcereal-macaroni-rice-raisins-seasonings-spreadsspaghetti-soft-drinks-crackers-and-cookies aisleâ⬠; Their intrusiveness increases and besides literary irony, they produce an ambiguity of intent or authorââ¬â¢s attitude (hence diction) in his story, which is matched somewhat by unexpected metaphors or visual comparisons, like ââ¬Å"two smoothest scoops of vanillaâ⬠, ââ¬Å"outside the sunshine is skating around on the asphalt outside the sunshine is skating around on the asphaltâ⬠, ââ¬Å"his back [was] stiff, as if hed just had an injection of ironâ⬠. All of these figures, although appropriate functionally to the text, often call attention to themselves and piece out Updikeââ¬â¢s style. Updike, John (1962) Pigeon Feathers, and Other Stories. New York: Alfred A. Knopf.
